Week 2 : Leadership and Culture: Counter, Cross and Aqua-EPIC

(note: if you are looking for the Nehemiah articles, I moved them to the post for Week 1, click here)...
========

 For tonight's discussion on
Leadership and Culture, we'll deal with
  • "Counter-Cultural" Leadership,
  • Cross-Cultural Leadership, and
  • Leadership in EPIC  Times
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1)
Counter-Cultural:

Here are some notes from the Palm Sunday/Lamb of God video..  Implications for leadership?

The "first shall be last" inclusuo/chiasm/parable (Matthew 20):
 ------------------
But many who are first will be last,
and many who are last will be first.

For the kingdom of heaven
is like:
a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard.
He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
"About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.'
So they went. "He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?  'Because no one has hired us,' they answered.   "He said to them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard.' "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.' "The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.' "But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?'
So the last will be first,
and the first will be last.

MORE Bible study/"literary world":

     Remembering  what we called:
    • -"story shaping story"
    • -hyperlinking
    • -intertextuality?
Here is the "visualizing the Bible" site.

Took place after the multitude had been with Jesus for one day. Took place after the multitude had been with Jesus for three days.
The multitude was mostly Jewish. The multitude would have been mostly Gentile.
Took place near Bethsaida Julias on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Took place in the Decapolis on the southeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
Jesus used 5 loaves and 2 fish. Jesus used 7 loaves and a few small fish.
There were 12 small baskets of leftovers. There were 7 large baskets of leftovers.

    3)EPIC Culture:

Short speech recently given by Clay Shirky (author of
"Here Comes Everybody:The Power of Organizing Without Organizations”),
    at the Web 2.0 conference.

    A transcript is available here;
an outline by Tim Bauer here,
but since media is message/messenger massage
and that is part of the point,
I would recommend watching it first.

Especially for those who think they "don't have the time," 13:00-15:32.

    --------------------------

Remember from last week that Leonard Sweet, in several books ("Postmodern Pilgrims" and "The Gospel According to Starbucks") spells out the EPIC acrostic to image the culture we live in.
    See:

    --

In earlier books ("Aqua Church: Essential Leadership Arts" and "Aqua Church 2.0", Sweet called the same phenomomenon a liquid or aqua culture:

    • Free online read of much of Aqua Church 2.0 here
    • Summary of Aqua Church and the Leadership Arts here
We watched his first three videos last week, and here are the three for tonight:

      -----------------
Parables are an amazing way of leading...especially with EPICS...but will all cultures..
Practice writing/telling a parable, using these two items:

Eugene Peterson's classic definition of parable/metaphor is here.

Remember this video, and the list we made from it?  If you missed class tonight, watch it now, and then make a list of comments on the genre of this documentary and  a list of how it made you feel.
Then bring your list to class to join the discussion

Preparation for next week (in addition to assigned reading):

      1)Bring magazines
2)Take the Myers-Briggs online (if time permits)
3)Read the summary of "Dark Side"   HERE  if time.
4)Remember, for your leader interviews, see "Writing Asssignments," remember that a power point or video is accepted as an alternative to the written paper.
A video would be great, as you are interviewing people.
